The predominant use of the Natural Gas is not in residential Home Stoves..This is a moronic assumption and the bullying of the man at the end of the town meeting was unfair and unacceptable.
If you had asked that man if he was willing to cut his electric usage, I think that you would have gotten a better answer..  (Yes, Of course he would be willing..)
Instead, he was made to look vulnerable and the valid points that he did make were minimized

Most of the Coal that is being burned in the US is being used is to fire the Utility Electric plants.  (48% of all the electricity generated in the USA is generated from Coal plants..).
Yet, it was said that the Natural Gas is needed to replace the dirty (and dangerous) Coal and Oil that is currently being burned....

"Alternatives have impacts......
Blowing up mountain tops to get Coal....
The gulf BP Horizon accident."

What Mr Hanger did not emphasize is that all of the Coal Mining in the United States is currently legal and regulated by the EPA.
Therefore all of the coal related environmental consequences are the responsibility of the inadequate rules that are enforced by the EPA!

"We need to get the energy that we all are demanding.....We need to get serious about the problem...."
"Even He does not like the choices"......

The reason that even "he does not like the choices" are because they are bad choices...
One answer is to let the prices go up and the demand will decrease..
When the Price goes up, Solar will become viable and people will then have a choice.
That is how the free market is supposed to work....

He said that Coal is Dangerous, Dirty and Destructive to the Ecosystem....but it is necessary and so it is allowed....
That is exactly what is happening again with the Natural Gas in the Marcellus Shale.  The destructive consequences are being intentionally ignored..........That is really all there is to it.

Later, it was made clear that the gas obtained from the Marcellus Shale is currently cheaper than gas obtained elsewhere and that the gas is traded on the open market as a commodity....
So what man in the audience said earlier WAS true.
Currently the US Coal Plants are active (Not yet converted to NG) and the Natural Gas that is obtained today is not saving any of that Coal from being burned...

OK, The Natural Gas from the Marcellus Shale is cheaper... Why is that?
There are currently minimal EPA protections for the Water, the Air, the Earth, the roads, the people or the cultures in the in PA communities that will live through this Industrial Assault.  (This makes the NG cheaper).

Almost all of the actual costs are deferred or externalized. (That is why this is a classic example of Natural Resource Plunder).

There are no comprehensive impact studies.  (Because the facts will not be pretty... and so it is less complicated to delay or defer the impact studies).

There are no plans to correct the problems after they happen, (Because the cleanup of Ground water contamination is not variable on a large scale [or even a small scale].....and is therefore not really an option.)

This Gas is basically being given to the Oil and Gas companies for free (except for the actual cost of drilling and the pipelines.).  (Since that can not ever be justified, it is a topic that is routinely avoided...)

It seems that this sort of video debate is inherently deficient because the facts are not able to be honestly discussed and this is simply a race to the end to see who can win the battle of multiple soundbites...

General Comments:

Introduction:
Example of potholes on a dirt road???  This could have been a much heavier hitting report..
Damage to roads is not a long term problem....Broken roads and bridges can eventually be corrected...  Time should not be used discussing this...  It is really just a Civil lawsuit issue.

They wasted a lot of time on the severance tax  This again is simply a human/Paper Money problem...

The problem with the Natural Gas drilling in the Marcellus shale is the Permanent Environmental Impact.
This is where the debate should be focused.

Everything that S Hallowich said seems to be aimed at emotions more than facts..
"Some Air pollutions issues..."    Very lightweight argument....

Waiting for the School bus / Counting the Waste trucks.   This is very sad and it may sway some people, but in general, most people will not be moved to action by these types of emotional testimonials.
The professionals in the Government and the Corporations routinely dismiss anything that is based on emotion.

These are some Real issues that could have been debated in more detail:

150 foot buffer from existing is not enough from high quality streams.
150 feet is almost nothing!   This statement was not challenged is a strong way....

202 inspectors on the EPA payroll...
As of April 2011, The EPA inspectors cannot write citations without permission!  (See PA EPA Nullified! webtab).

Hanger states that there is only 1 serious known problem in Dimmock Pa.
There are many more examples of contamination than just Dimmock, Pa
There are even other sites listed on this webpage....
This statement should not have been allowed to go unchallenged...  (in an Honest Debate).

He says that the "Facts speak for them selves".
Yes, they do....and Yes, they will.
A lot of rational concerns are posted on this (and other) webpages...The facts are not on the side of the Gas drillers.
Paper Money profit is going to generated.  That is one overwhelming fact that is for sure...  Everything else seems to have negative impact..

Hanger say that the regulations have been re-written within the past 2 years...
This is just a smoke screen to make it seem that adequate reaction is happening...
This drilling has been planned for some time...These minimal regulations should have been re-written years ago and even now, they still permit the contamination of the ecosystem.. (for short term reasons).

The Oil and Gas Act is written in such a way that allows Gas sites to be put near water supplies.
Mr Hanger seems honestly disturbed by this....   He seems to be blocked from proper action by the wording of this legal document.
People will suffer and he seems sorry "but it is what it is....."

The man in the audience from the Lincoln Place Action Group had a valid objection....
The EPA may feel that this is acceptable...and the EPA may justify the legality of this behavior with the existing definitions in some jury rigged legal document, but this IS the intentional and legal poisoning of the Ecosystem for profit.. and it is fair and just for people to publicly call it what it is.

The EPA, and the elected officials and the Oil and Gas Industry may feel that "it is what it is"  and that "it must be done"....but the truth is that the Ecosystem will be poisoned and the People that live here have the right to disagree and to force a ban on this distructive Industrial Assault on our Health, our Property values and our culture.

Hanger states that the burning of Gas and Oil is cleaner BUT that is marketing SPIN because he is intentionally ignoring the pollution caused by getting the Natural Gas... which very destructive...
(This was challenged).  You can tell he knows this is marketing spin, because he says "the Burning of Natural Gas is cleaner"  This is a clasic example of pure Spin and legal wording...
Hanger verbally defends the actions of the EPA stating that existing rules (and some new rules) are being followed... but when the facts are seriously challenged, he does not seem to be willing to be (or cannot be) completely honest.

Hanger finds it disturbing that people are upset that they are being poisoned but as the spokesman for the EPA, He seems forced to defend the existing policy by quoting statistics of inspectors being hired.... and paper regulations.

There is some focus on the 500 PPM Total Dissolved Solids spec and how that regulation is good enough...
The fact is that this massive amount of toxic Industrial by-products are being intentionally put into our ecosystem and it is all going to have a negative effect......

Additional Comments:
Oil & Gas act in Pa.  is the legal document that needs to be corrected....

It seems that a Natural Gan Ban is unconstitutional in Pa.  (Yet the PA constitution says that Clean Water and land and air are to be protected...)

There is more radiation in the NYS areas and radiation is less of a problem in the souther areas...  (But there is no plan to adequately react to this radioactive wast problem at this time...)

Jobs 90,000 new jobs...to 200,000 by 2020
This is again clearly just a smokescreen for other motives....

Clean Water Act does not apply to Natural Gas drilling..

NEVER FOUND frac fluid in well water....  This just is not true..... They limit/minimize the definition of a Frac fluid accident but who says that they have the right to set the definition?
If the Drilling creates waste, and the waste finds its way into the water, then you cannot say the Frac fluid NEVER found it way into the water supply...   This half truth needs to be challenged every time...

"Regulations are in force"....This could not be further from the truth.....by any definition, this is not a heavily regulated industry in Pennsylvania...

Comment:  The Water is already Clean enough to drink!  This is a new problem that is being systematically created by the Oil & Gas Industry.
